I returned to work last week after being a stay-at-home mom for 2.5 years, and I’ve been thinking a lot about how much of my motherhood experience I owe to my husband.

They say behind every great man is a great woman, but for the mother that I am, the mother I aspire to be every day, there is a great man. And that man, my husband, gave me the most precious gift there is; the gift of time.

I remember taking an evening walk with him a few days before we became parents, and deciding that for a few years, I would stay home with our children. He knew it was important to me, and we made it happen. He took care and responsibility of our family by being the sole bread winner, and allowed me that time to be with our children, to watch them grow, to raise them.

It’s a gift that hasn’t gone unnoticed.

When you become a parent, the time and attention that once was for your spouse, is now divided between the little people in your life. You happily share it because it comes from a place of love. We are parents, we adore our children, and this is the reality we had dreams about. We are Mom and Dad, but we are also still just two individuals, together because of one thing in common – love.

As a new chapter of life begins with both of us as working parents, time will be even more limited, but we will continue to give each other the gift of time, every day. The gift of time in the form of intent; a deliberate effort to being more mindful and intentional about the time we spend together. To treasure the moments we are able to cuddle on the couch after the kids go to bed. The date nights we are able to have, the moments we get to talk about our dreams, our aspirations, and to continue to refuel the same energy that has gotten us to where we are now.

A gift of time is a gift of love, and my love, you have given me so much of both.
